Breastfeeding Support
Whether you are sure you want to breastfeed your baby or you are still deciding WIC can help. Since the major goal of the WIC program is to improve nutrition among infants, WIC moms are encouraged to breastfeed. Although breastfeeding is natural and very rewarding, it is not always easy. The best time to set up breastfeeding support is while you are pregnant and WIC supports breastfeeding in a variety of ways including:
Trained Peer Counselors
Breastfeeding is most successful when mothers are supported by a variety of people when they need it. For this reason WIC has specifically trained peer counselors that help moms anytime of the day or night with their breastfeeding challenges. These peer counselors can help troubleshoot problems and provide helpful tips and referrals.
Breast Pumps
WIC has pumps available for clients that need them. If you are returning to work or school, have a baby in the NICU or other issues that require a pump WIC can provide a pump that will fit your needs. Many insurance companies also provide breast pumps and WIC staff can provide education and support on pumping issues.
Breastfeeding Education
Breastfeeding classes are offered weekly in both English and Spanish. Trained Lactation Educators teach the classes to help prepare new moms for the breastfeeding experience. Classes are also designed for experienced breastfeeding moms.
Community Breastfeeding Coalition
The Davis County WIC Program is the proud lead agency of the Davis County Breastfeeding Coalition which is a group of community agencies, businesses, and individuals who work to protect, promote and support breastfeeding throughout the community.
