Interpreting an Inspection

Below is an explanation of each section of an inspection report. You can access an example of a full inspection report here.

Establishment & Inspection Information

Contains the establishment name, location and information about the inspection such as the date, the purpose of the inspection, the inspection result, the number of violations and how many repeat violations were observed. A description of the inspection item check boxes is found in this section. The Certified Food Safety Managers if required are in this section.

Foodborne Illness Risk Factors and Public Health Interventions

Items 1-29 are violations that the FDA has determined to be the most likely cause of foodborne illnesses. Control of these factors is critical to the health and safety of the public. A facility that was out of compliance at the time of the inspection will have the out box checked and a description of the violation below.

Good Retail Practices 

Items 30-56 are management practices that also can lead to food borne illnesses if not properly maintained. Items that were observed as out of compliance at the time of the inspection will have the out box checked and a description of the violation below.
