Job Description

General Purpose

Level I:  Under general supervision from the Operations Manager or Crewleader, performs semi skilled truck driving and other duties as required for construction, repair, and maintenance projects.

Level II: Under general supervision from the Operations Manager or Crewleader, performs semi-skilled and skilled truck driving, heavy equipment operation and other duties as required for construction, repair, and maintenance projects.

Example of Duties

Level I:  Performs pre-use inspections on all trucks and equipment prior to use and at the end of shift.  Drives trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, delivery and unloading of crushed gravel, fill dirt, road chips, hot mix asphalt, cold mix asphalt and other necessary road or flood control construction and repair materials.   Operates a snowplow and/or sander.

Level II:  Performs pre-use inspections on all trucks and equipment prior to use and at the end of shift.  Drives trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, delivery and unloading of crushed gravel, fill dirt, road chips, hot mix asphalt, cold mix asphalt and other necessary road or flood control construction and repair materials.  Operates a variety of equipment to construct and repair roads and flood control projects, transport equipment, plow roads and performs other projects.

Levels I & II:  

Performs tasks requiring use of a variety of electric and non-electric hand tools and equipment commonly used in construction, maintenance and repair work.

Spreads slag/rock chips for sealing roads.  Spreads road base for repair of unimproved roads or to shoulder improved roads.  Performs manual labor such as loading and unloading trucks, trimming trees and bushes, cleaning curbs/catch basins, repairing fences, pouring and finishing concrete, filling and stacking sand bags when necessary.  Cleans and maintains storm drains; sets up concrete foundation forms, sets up curb and gutter forms; assists in repairing and laying of pipe.  Sets-up traffic control devices for construction zones.

Inspects and operates loader, roller, sander, snow plow and other equipment when required; inspects and operates support equipment including air compressor, air hammer, chipper, chain saw (includes changing chain saw blade), water pump, gasoline generator, plate compactor, foot compactor and cut-off saw.

Maintains truck operational and service records including inspection and proper maintenance of assigned truck and equipment; reports mechanical problems for shop repairs.  Installs/removes snow plow on and off trucks; changes snow plow blades; installs and removes sanders from trucks; changes tires on dump trucks; washes trucks and equipment. Available for on call snow removal and other emergencies.

Attends job-related training as required.

Weed Control.  Performs spraying of noxious weeds; sprays and mows unincorporated County roadsides and flood channels to prevent overgrowth of weeds, grasses, etc. on nearby surfaces; sprays around traffic control devices, fire hydrants, etc. to maintain visibility of structures; may assist municipalities or private property owners with spraying and mowing.  Identifies noxious weeds and mix chemicals for treatment of each type.  Inspects spraying and mowing equipment before and after each use.   Maintains accurate records of all spraying and mowing.  Assists in inspecting properties to assess total acreage of noxious weeds within County.  

Operates a motor vehicle in a safe manner and in compliance with all Utah laws and regulations. 

Performs related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience

Level I:  High school graduation plus one (1) year of full-time truck driving experience.

Level II: High school graduation plus two (2) years of full-time experience driving equipment of similar type and size.

Special Qualifications

Level I:  Possess a valid Class B Utah Commercial Driver License and a Driver’s Medical Card; must obtain a Class A CDL within six (6) months of hire.

May be required to obtain a Pesticide Applicator License (non-commercial) from the Utah Department of Agriculture and Health within six (6) months of hire depending on the position.

Employees driving a personal vehicle while on county business must maintain the minimum vehicle liability insurance as specified in the Utah Code.

Level II: 

Must possess a valid Class A Utah Commercial Driver License and a Driver’s Medical Card.

May be required upon hire: Forklift Operations Training, Hazard Communications Training, UDOT Highway Operations Safety School, and Construction Traffic Control Training.

May be required to possess a Utah State Pesticide Control license depending on the position.

Employees driving a personal vehicle while on county business must maintain the minimum vehicle liability insurance as specified in the Utah Code.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Level I:  Knowledge of:  safe operation and basic maintenance of trucks and equipment of various weights; legal weight limits for trucks with and without pup; locations of county roads and storm drains; traffic control sign requirements; standard practices, methods, tools, and equipment used in highway/flood control construction, maintenance, repair, and snow removal work; safe and proper use/storage of pesticide chemicals.

Skill in:  vehicle and equipment operations; operating electric and non-electric hand tools; operating two-way radios.

This position requires the driving of a motor vehicle; skill in operating a motor vehicle in a safe manner; ability to insure motor vehicle is operating in a safe manner; knowledge of Utah motor vehicle rules and regulations.

Ability to:  operate construction vehicles and equipment of various sizes; perform heavy manual labor; work outdoors in all weather conditions for extended periods; read and understand blue prints; keep vehicle/equipment maintenance records; identify noxious weeds; properly mix and store pesticide chemicals; calibrate spray equipment; follow written and oral instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, other employees and the general public.

Level II: 

Working knowledge of:  heavy equipment operation practices, procedures and safety; basic maintenance of trucks and equipment of various weights; legal weight limits for truck with and without pup; locations of county roads and storm drains; traffic control sign requirements; standard practices, methods, tools, and equipment used in highway/flood control construction, maintenance, repair, and snow removal work; safe and proper use/storage of pesticide chemicals.

Skill in:  operating large vehicles and heavy equipment; operating electric and non-electric hand tools; operating two-way radios.

This position requires the driving of a motor vehicle; skill in operating a motor vehicle in a safe manner; ability to insure motor vehicle is operating in a safe manner; knowledge of Utah motor vehicle rules and regulations.
