The Magnolia Sword: A Ballad of Mulan
by Sherry Thomas

All her life, Mulan has trained for one purpose: to win the duel that every generation in her family must fight. If she prevails, she can reunite a pair of priceless heirloom swords separated decades earlier, and avenge her father, who was paralyzed in his own duel. When a messenger arrives, demanding that all families send one soldier to fight the Rouran invaders in the north. Mulan is conscripted and takes her place on an elite force with her family enemy in command.

Don't think of this as just another retelling. Think of it as an exciting historical adventure. This book has a great storyline and I love the characters. The reader is very well suited to the material. The historical notes at the end of the book are very interesting.
