Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT)/ Paramedic Tactical Rescue Unit (PTRU)

The Davis County SWAT Team, currently comprised of 22 operators, has been in operation since 1980. The Team is a group of Sheriff's deputies and local police officers who are also EMT-basics and paramedics.

We are one of only nine agencies throughout the nation who daily perform the primary dual role of sworn law enforcement officer and paramedic. We are the first SWAT team in the nation[3] to utilize dual role law enforcement-paramedics and the longest actively running and licensed Paramedic Tactical Rescue Unit (PTRU) organized in 1980. Since 1990, we have held a state licensure through the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services (BEMS) as a PTRU. This licensure grants our unit the authority to respond in Davis County and throughout the State of Utah. As of July 5, 2010, the Davis County Sheriff's Office and Cache County Sheriff's Office received from BEMS the licensure of Paramedic Tactical Rescue[4].

In the early 1990s, we established a close partnership with the Salt Lake City SWAT Team for whom we provide PTRU and SWAT support. We have a similar partnership with the Bountiful City SWAT Team that was established in 1986. As of January 2010, we have re-established our relationship with the Hill Air Force Base Tactical Team[1].

We average over 60 operations per year[1]. These operations include, but are not limited to pre-planned high hazard no knock search warrants (which comprise the majority of our operations), hurry-ups, buy-rips, barricaded subjects, dignitary protection, man hunts, hostage/rescues, surround and call outs, tactical search and rescues and any mission requiring a coordinated tactical response. We not only incorporate law enforcement and tactical training during an operation but also medical skills. Such requests range from Basic Life Support to Advanced Life Support.

We are proud to serve our county and state as expert tactical emergency medical service providers.
