Tuberculosis Highlights

There are an estimated 9-14 million people in the United States infected with M. tuberculosis.  On average, about 10% of infected individuals will develop active tuberculosis (TB) disease at some point in their lives. There were 9,272 TB cases in the United States in 2016 (2.9 cases per 100,000 persons) – a 2.8% decrease compared to 2015. This is the lowest case count on record in the United States. Utah had 29 confirmed cases (0.9 cases per 100,000 persons) reported in 2017. 

Davis County had three new active tuberculosis disease cases reported in 2017 and 102 latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) cases.

Latent tuberculosis infection is a condition in which TB bacteria are alive, but inactive in the body. People with LTBI have no symptoms, cannot spread TB to others, and usually have a positive skin test reaction or interferon gamma release assay (blood test). In 2017, a total of 102 LTBI cases were reported in Davis County.
